Updated: Oct 24, 2025

Sermon guide for September 21, 2025

How to Use This Guide:

These guides are designed to help you engage more deeply with my weekly sermon, no matter what stage of life you're in. Use this guide to prepare your heart to receive God's Word before worship, or to reflect on God's Word the week following worship.

Parents, use the information in this guide to have meaningful conversations with your kids that nurture their faith and help them grow in God’s love.

Finally, I’d love for you to leave a comment! My hope is that these posts spark intergenerational conversations, helping us all learn from and encourage one another.

Scriptures referenced in the sermon:

Hosea 10:1-8; Deuteronomy 8:11-14; Proverbs 30:8-9.

Main Idea:

Hosea 10:1-8 warns that abundance can multiply temptation, nurture idolatry, be deceptive, and, if misused, will ultimately be judged by God. We can safeguard our hearts from the dangers of abundance by giving generously, keeping a rhythm of rest and renewal, and keeping our hearts focused on the Giver rather than the gifts.

Kids (ages 5-12)

  • Key Insight: Everything we have is a gift from God.

  • Reflection Prompt: Do I thank God for my toys, food, and family, or do I just want more?

  • Action Step: Pick one toy or item to share or give away this week to practice generosity.

Teens (ages 13-17)

  • Key Insight: What we chase after shows what we really value.

  • Reflection Prompt: Am I more focused on having the newest clothes, tech, or status—or on loving and honoring God?

  • Action Step: Take one hour this week to set aside distractions (phone, games, etc.) and spend that time in prayer, Scripture, or serving someone else.

Adults (ages 18-64)

  • Key Insight: Abundance is temporary; faithfulness lasts forever.

  • Reflection Prompt: Does how I spend my money, time, and energy show that I trust God more than stuff?

  • Action Step: Review your budget or giving this week and intentionally increase generosity in one area (church, missions, helping someone in need).

Seniors (ages 65+)

  • Key Insight: The legacy of faith matters more than possessions.

  • Reflection Prompt: What story will my children, grandchildren, or community tell about how I used my blessings?

  • Action Step: Share a story with your family this week about how God has provided for you—and encourage them to trust Him with their own abundance.
