The Blessing of Unity | Psalm 133

From the Sermon Series: Highs, Lows, & Hallelujahs: Psalms for Every Season

Sermon Guide for June 14, 2026

How to Use This Guide:

These guides are designed to help you engage more deeply with my weekly sermon or serve as stand-alone, self-guided Bible studies. Use them to prepare your heart before worship or to reflect on God’s Word throughout the week.

Parents, use the “Family Practice” section to lead meaningful conversations that nurture your kids' faith and help them grow in God’s love.

Big Idea

God delights in the unity of his people. Unity is a precious gift that sets us apart for his purposes, refreshes us with his blessing, and reflects the life Christ came to create among us.

Main Point 1: Unity Is Good and Pleasant (v. 1)

David begins with a simple observation: it is good and pleasant when God's people dwell together in unity. Unity does not mean uniformity or that everyone is exactly the same. Unity happens when diverse people lay down the "me-centered" mindset to love, serve, forgive, and pursue God's purposes together.

Reflection Questions

  • What relationships in your life are marked by unity?

  • What relationships are strained or divided?

  • Which of the following tends to threaten your unity with others: pride, unforgiveness, gossip, or demanding uniformity?

Practice

Ask God to reveal one relationship where you need to take a step toward reconciliation this week.

Main Point 2: Unity Sets God's People Apart for His Purposes (v. 2)

David compares unity to the sacred anointing oil poured on Aaron’s head, running down his beard and onto the collar of his robes. This oil was used in Exodus to consecrate the priest (to set him apart for holy service).

Just as the oil set Aaron apart for God's service, unity helps God's people fulfill God's purposes. A fractured church ruins its public witness, but a unified church is consecrated to reflect God's character and carry out his mission with massive effectiveness.

Reflection Questions

  • How does conflict hinder a church's witness?

  • How does unity help us represent Christ to others?

  • In what ways can you contribute to the unity of your church family?

Practice

Look for one opportunity this week to encourage, serve, or strengthen another believer.

Main Point 3: Unity Refreshes and Sustains God's People (v. 3a)

David transitions to a second metaphor, comparing unity to the heavy dew of Mount Hermon falling on the dry mountains of Zion. Mount Hermon was the highest peak in the region, known for abundant, life-giving moisture.

In a parched, dry land, dew was the literal difference between life and death for vegetation. Division will dry out a church or a home, leaving it spiritually barren. Unity acts like heavenly dew, turning a dry community into a flourishing greenhouse where people can actually grow and thrive.

Reflection Questions

  • Have you ever been part of a church or family marked by conflict? What effect did it have?

  • Have you experienced the refreshment that comes from healthy Christian relationships?

  • How can you help create a culture of encouragement and peace?

Main Point 4: God Commands His Blessing Where Unity Dwells (v. 3b)

David concludes the psalm by declaring that "there the Lord has commanded the blessing, life forevermore." God delights to pour out his blessing where his people dwell together in unity. In other words, if you want to be blessed by God, seek unity!

Reflection Questions

  • Why do you think God values unity so highly?

  • How does the gospel help us overcome pride and division?

  • What would change in your life if you pursued unity more intentionally?

Practice

Pray each day this week for unity in your family, your church, and among Christians everywhere.

Christ Connection

The truth is that we often fail to uphold the ideals of Psalm 133. This psalm points us beyond ourselves. Jesus died and rose again not only to forgive our sins but also to unite God's people into one family. Through his cross, he breaks down barriers, removes hostility, and creates one body (See Ephesians 2:11-22).

Because of his finished work on the cross, true unity is no longer an impossible human ideal—it is a reality poured into our hearts by his Spirit, giving us the power to love one another as he loved us.

Family Practice

Read Together

Read Psalm 133 aloud as a family.

Big Truth

God loves it when his people live together in unity.

Unity means choosing to love, forgive, help, and encourage one another even when we are different.

Talk About It

For Younger Children

  • What does it mean to get along with someone?

  • Why do brothers and sisters sometimes fight?

  • How do you feel when people in your family are kind to one another?

  • What do you think makes God happy about unity?

For Older Children and Teens

  • Why is unity difficult?

  • How can pride damage relationships?

  • What can we do when we disagree with someone?

The Two Pictures in Psalm 133

  1. Oil on Aaron

God used special oil to set Aaron apart for his work.

Family Question: How does getting along help God's people do his work better?

  1. Dew on Mount Hermon

Dew helps plants stay healthy and grow.

Family Question: How can kindness, encouragement, and forgiveness help people grow spiritually?

Family Activity

Give each family member a piece of paper.

Have everyone write:

  1. One way someone in the family encourages them.

  2. One way they can help strengthen unity in the family this week.

Share answers together.

Family Challenge

Choose one of these this week:

  • Pray together every day.

  • Write an encouraging note to a family member.

  • Apologize for a wrong attitude or action.

  • Forgive someone who has hurt you.

  • Do a kind act for another family member without being asked.

Prayer

Father, thank you for loving us and making us part of your family. Help us to love one another, forgive one another, and live in unity. Thank You for sending Jesus to bring us together and make us one people. Help our family reflect your love this week. In Jesus' name, amen.
